Dungdangae-Taryong is a traditional folk song which is handed down in Jeollado. It is 'Yukjabaegitori', a traditional melody in Jeollado, and has a moderate tone which is neither gay nor sad extremely. Dungdangae-Taryong has a various types of the leading and the refrain. Thus it is different from other folk songs. On the refrain, it can be divided different forms. The type of the refrain is associated with a unfolding way of poetic sentiment of the lyrics and a way of singing a song. Dungdangae-Taryong has various types because its environments are diverse and its subjects want to comprehend the emotional expression.
Dungdangae-Taryong is performed in an exclusive place such as a room where women weave a spinning wheel or a female meeting on the 15th of the first lunar month. The performance is played by "Beokdolrim" that is sung by turns by many people around the wall and is used a musical instrument such as "Mulbanggu" or "Whalbanggu". In an exclusive space, women express their talent freely and participate in creation and transmission of folk songs through a performance of "Beokdolrim". They transform a working tool into art tool through a desire for maximizing art experience and joy. This ability is based on Honam people's cultural capacity.
Dungdangae-Taryong is connected with 'Ganggansuwalrae' closely as both a female indoor play and a female playing song in western Jeollado. The cultural vitality of Dungdangae-Taryong is not to stay in tradition but to outstretch in modern times. Also Dungdangae-Taryong is expected that it gets out of the limitation, the local culture, so it can develop into an universal culture. The characteristic of the performance of Dungdangae-Taryong is to have an possibility used as a cultural contents in modern society.
