This paper is a phonological study on loanwords of Korean from Indo-European languages in enlightenment period(1896~1910). It is supposed that loanwords in newspapers of this period enable us to find the clue to the change of phonological system and phonological process. On this assumption, more than 2,000 loanwords selected from three main newspapers in this period were analyzed.
The loanword of this period shows the transient consonantal list and system between the latter half of modern Korean and contemporary Korean. Although the transcription of loanwords among tense, aspirated and plain consonant are sometimes in confusion, it is caused not by the confusion in Korean consonantal system but by the different relationship among obstruent consonants between source language and Korean. It is usual that ‘ㅈ, ㅊ, ㅉ’ were palatals in this period, but the following diphthongs(야[ya], 여[y?], 요[yo], 유[yu], 위[wi]) tell us that these consonants were not palatal but alveolars, or at least they were in the middle of moving from alveolar to palatal.
Excepting that ‘위[u], 외[o]’ were not included in the monophthong system, it is considered that the vowel system of this period is almost same as the current one. However, judging from the confused transcription between ‘에[e]’ and ‘여[y?]’, it seems that the vowel ‘에’ was not settled down as monophthong /e/. And, it has much possibility that ‘위, 외’ were not /uy, oy/ but /wi, we/. Most of phonological precesses found in the transcriptions of loanwords are similar to contemporary Korean. The neutralization of consonants in syllablefinal and the glottalization after plosive consonants are identical with those of contemporary Korean; the neutralization is well reflected on transcriptions, while the glottalization is partially reflected. Both liquidization(progressive and regressive) and palatalization are also observed through hypercorrected transcription. And the rounding of ‘으[?]’ to ‘우[u]’ after bilabial consonants is well reflected on transcriptions, while the fronting of ‘으[?]’ to ‘이[i]’ after coronal consonants and the insertion of semivowel between vowels are partially reflected.
