초록

The goal of this paper is to show advantages to phonetic adaptation theory (PET) over phonological one (POT) in explaining English loanword generation process in Korean.
Every phenomenon POT takes as its evidence can be explained with PET or other mechanisms like spelling borrowing. And we have many other phenomena which show phonetic adaptation obviously.
PET regards so-called vowel insertion as perception of illusory vowel. The evidences are as follows: i) robust perception, ii) adopting phoneme sequences native language does not have, iii) various added vowels dependent on environment, iv) adding/?/in word-final consonant cluster in spite of sharing the consonants between L1 and L2 in their underlying representations.
Adapting foreign word in terms of sound and phonological alternation of L1 are different each other, and input and output forms that native phonology and loanword phonology take are not the same, either. These facts make us posit loanword module separate from native phonology.
