Now a study on the intercourse through the sea needs to be analyzed systematically. The researchers about the period of Goryo(高麗) haven't almost studied this subject. Their researchs have centered on diplomatic, economic and cultural intercourses.
This paper tried to analyze private intercourses with Sung(宋). And I looked into the characteristics of cultural and human resource intercourse. Particularly, I investigated the role and disposition of Sung's native experts, writers and Buddhist monks.
Many of them came from southern part including Chonju(泉州), Bokgunsong(福建省). This area is the maritime trade center with Goryo. Therefore they came to Goryo through the sea route. They stayed in Goryo about one year. The staying period could be increased by the approval of Goryo's government. They could be naturalized by the diplomatic agreement of Goryo and Sung. Goryo's government induced them to stay long or become naturalized. This was due to the necessity for reserve of human resource about the operation of politics and diplomacy. They hoped to stay in Goryo to overcome their own limit.
The maritime trade merchants received cultural and manpower resource of high level. They mediated diplomatic relations and became officers. They helped to control and develop Goryo's Buddhism. And they had influence on personal political deeds.
The experts had influence on the medicine, music, interpretation, and divination. The intelligentsia also contributed to the politics, diplomacy, Confucianism, and Buddhism. Thy were appointed again officers of Goryo after the periods of Mokjong(穆宗) and Hyunjong(顯宗). The criterion was talent. They became officers by a special examination and talent examination. Some of them also served as surrounding force for the king and examination managers. Just they contributed to strengthening the royal authority or centralization.
