As a well-known fact, in English compound nouns can have a variety of meanings. In particular, compound nouns usually refer to interacting objects. Based on a production and comprehension task with novel compound nouns, this study explored whether Korean-speaking children know that compound nouns refer to interacting objects, and whether they know the subcatgorization functions of compound nouns. Thirty Korean-speaking three-year-old and four-year-old children participated in this study. The results showed that three-year-old children and four-year-old children equally understood the meaning of compound nouns. In contrast with the comprehension task, three-year-old children produced less compound nouns to name two interacting objects than four-year-old children. These results demonstrate that Korean-speaking children's knowledge of producing compound nouns continues to develop throughout the preschool years, even though their knowledge of the meaning of compound nouns appeared very early. In addition, the three-year-old children preferred to choose the head noun rather than choose the modifying noun when they made a single-word response, suggesting that they know the subcategorization functions of compound nouns. Therefore, results of the present study suggest that children's comprehension exceeds their production level. Finally, possible interpretations of the mismatch in production and comprehension found in the acquisition of compound nouns are discussed.
