The human body itself is a reality. We all have a body. We live, die, suffer pain and play with our bodies. The body has been configured in a variety of experiential, social, and technological contexts and through differences in theoretical approaches. As the body has come to form a central field of social, cultural and political activity, this paper examines the body revealed in English poetry and especially the relationship between body and soul.
In Beowulf Beowulf is a wise, courageous and sacrificial hero, but does not have concrete bodily characteristics. In The Canterbury Tales the Wife of Bath was described as “somdeel deaf”, “bold was hir face and reed of hewe”, “gat-toothed” and “hipes large”, a precursor of feminist thought. One sonnet, “5” of Astrophel and Stella by Philip Sidney presents the beauty of body is being in vain, then the speaker in this poem paradoxically expresses how much he loves Stella. The “Sonnet 64” of Amoretti by E. Spenser as a blason describes the human body, especially an ideal and beautiful woman's body in detail. On the other hand, “Sonnet 130” by W. Shakespeare describes a real woman's body. “Air and Angels” by John Donne presents the relationship between the spiritual love and the physical love and the relationship between soul and flesh in positive fashion. In “The Marriage of Heaven and Hell” W. Blake claims the monism of body and soul. Finally in “Expostulation and Reply” W. Wordsworth mentions the independence of the body.
This reading of English poetry demonstrates the view that the body and the soul are neither two nor one.
