Surveying the Korean version of the existing Japanese literature, especially in the case of Sorekara, one of the most well-known works of Soseki Natsume, this study aims at systematization of the qualitative improvement in translation of the existing Japanese literature, and at making a proposition of theory for teaching Japanese translation.
In so doing, I analyzed the types of mistranslation after extracting the portions that are clearly judged to be mistranslated other than suspicious portions from the work.
The types of the mistranslation I adjusted in the year 2002 are listed as follows;
(1) Simple mistakes conjectured to have been generated in the process of editing
(2) Mistranslation generated in the selection process for searching an equivalent vocabulary in a Japanese-Korean dictionary.
(3) Distortion of the original text by the excessive literal translation or free translation
(4) Mistranslation originated from the difference in the meaning of Chinese characters or the difference in usage and nuance between both languages
(5) Mistranslation caused by misreading grammatical constructions
(6) Omission from the original text
(7) Mistranslation owing to the shortage of understandings in Japanese culture
(8) Problem of typical words which are translated literally out of habit
(9) Mistakes owing to failure in grasping the correct meaning of the figurative expressions lurked in the literatary works
(10) Wrong transcription or translation of the peculiar Japanese words
The problem of conjunction translation and the necessity for attaching footnotes by the translator, however, remain to be examined.
