There were huge changes and transformations going on in the Buddhism of Naepo in the late Chosun Dynasty. In this study they were reviewed in terms of the number of Buddhist temples and Buddhist services held across the region.
First, the investigation was done from the aspect of the number of the Buddhist temples in the Naepo region. Just like the rest of the country during the times, the number continued to decrease. The degree and speed of such degradation in the number, however, were not particularly higher than other provinces. Rather a smaller number of Buddhist temples went through actual demolition compared with the average of the entire Chungcheong province. In general, it was extremely difficult to maintain the existence and functions of a Buddhist temple throughout the Chosun Dynasty, which can be proven by the fact that only 13% of the original temples survived till the end of the dynasty. The harsh reality for the Buddhist temples is also inferred from the fact that a great number of them had less than ten rooms.
They held a variety of Buddhist services in Naepo including repairing and remodeling the buildings, forging temple bells, and painting pictures of Buddha. Rare was the case when they carried out a huge service. Most of the Buddhist services were partial repair and remodeling jobs of the halls, and there was found no evidence that implied a hall or service of the royal level. In the Naepo region, Temple Gaeshim and Sudeok held relatively many different Buddhist services.
A Buddhist service required solid and affluent finance, which only could be made possible by the active support from laypersons. The Buddhist temples were not privileged to the generous support from the local powers with a few exceptions. The common way for them to raise money for a Buddhist service was to collect poor doles from the commons. Naepo had no large-scaled splendid Buddhist temples that enjoyed the great boon from the royal family.
The general condition was hard for the Buddhism of Naepo in those days. Under this condition. it must have been very difficult for the Buddhist temples to play the active leading roles in the community. Their potential, however, was never to be ignored considering the great priests that they cultivated later.
