The various types of wandering done by the characters described in Choi Cheok Jeon are influenced both by the writer's own personal experiences and the historical realities of the time. There are three types of wandering described in Choi Cheok Jeon.
The first type of wandering is the wandering of the refugee. When he came to Ming, Choi Cheok was escaping the reality of having lost his family. However, he did not settle anywhere at all. Similarly, the old Hu-geum soldier from Sakju was an immigrant who had suffered from tyranny.
The second type of wandering is the wandering of the captive. Ogyeong, who was captured and brought to Japan, only avoided harsh suffering because she was under a kind owner. She settled in Hangju, Ming after meeting Choi Cheok in Vietnam. Choi Cheok was captured in the Simha battle, but later returned with the help of a Hu-geum soldier.
The third type of wandering is the wandering of the fugitive. Jo Wui-han described another type of family separation in the episode of the wandering, separation and reuniting of the Ming soldier, Jin Wui-kyoeng, and his daughter.
In the reality of a time in which there were numerous vagrants, each scarred in their own way, whether physically or emotionally, the theme of 'wandering' exposes the scars of many people that were caused by the war and shares their pain, including the pain of Jo Wui-han himself.
