This study focused on the changes of materials used for Hanbok from the time of the opening of a port till the end of 1930s.
During this subject period, new phenomena have caused some confusions, such as mix of traditional and modernization, rapid improvements in both communication and transportation, changes in commercial activities and methods of doing businesses, participation of females in society, including those of Geishas’, propagation of imported goods, wide spread of education and training in technologies and other various socio-economical changes. In midst of these changes, from the opening of a port until 1920s, both traditional and imported materials have been used and starting in 1930s, artificial/synthetic materials started to substitute the usage of pure cotton weaved materials.
The majority of changes in materials used in Hanbok was for more in skirts (‘Chima’) then the tops (‘Jeogory’) and such trend was due to more participation of females in economic activities, considering the practicality and conveniences as females’ activities in society have continuously increased.
