On the level of expressions and concepts, certain patterns can be found in Japanese folksongs. It is indispensable to find and identify the patterns of wide range of folksongs in detail and to grasp the actuality of their conditions in both historical and present context. Moreover, it is crucial to examine the expression patterns in Japanese folk songs, as it is closely linked to the studies on the occasions and functions of folksongs, their relation to various literary works in the history of literature, their thought at the root, and their role in general education.
In this article, I examine the expression patterns in usuhikiuta, itohikiuta, taueuta, and kyodo minyo (newfolksong). The expression patterns in these songs can be classified into three types and their suggested definitions are as follows: (1) an expression pattern which stimulates people to work effectively, (2)anexpression pattern which persuades people present to join and sing, and (3) anexpression pattern which is considered to have an enchanting or magical effect.
