The monk Back-yong seong is considered one of the famous Buddhist Gasa poets of the period of the late Chosun dynasty and Japan invasion. He composed seven pieces of Buddhist Gasa in Korean and many essays throughout his whole life. He differed from common other monks by his composition of Gasa in Korean and participating in the independence movement, translating Chinese version Buddhist sutra into Korean version Buddhist sutra. From among seon monk Back, Yong- seong’s many literary works, I studied the way of narration and object cognition in seon monk Back, Yong-seong’s Buddhist Gasa.
Firstly, I found that the monk Back, Yong-seong is using three kinds of the way of narration in his Buddhist Gasa, those are presenting and emphasizing, requesting. Back, Yong-seong showed the many kinds of doctrine of Buddhism by using the way of presenting-narration and stressed on the several main ideas among all doctrines of Buddhism by using the way of emphasizing-narration, asked for all readers to practice the doctrine of Buddhism by using the way of requesting-narration. These three kinds of way of narration related with five kinds of sentences. He used the presentingnarration in his Buddhist Gasa with a declarative sentence, emphasizingnarration with an exclamatory sentence and a interrogative sentence, requesting-narration with an imperative sentence and an exhortative sentence.
Secondly, I researched his cognitions about the phenomena of all things-being, all living beings, the way of practicing. He recognized all things-being are related each other organically. For example, the nature created a material world by the principle of cause-effect and all living beings stemmed from a material world. Because the material world is made from the nature, the material world is mind itself. Next he thought all living beings consist of Buddha and mankind. But he thought all living beings are only one also. Lastly he is requesting people to execute four kinds of Buddhist practice in order to go beyond mundane world; repenting, chanting, reflecting inside, recognizing original Buddha nature.
