Koguryo dominated over vast areas as most mounted nomads did. This is the reason why Koguryo could survive and prosper among several nomads. Because of their bravery, people of Koguryo were mobilized as a punitive force by Wang Mang of Hsin.
Koguryo took the initiative in the war against Former Yen of Muyung Hui who had haunted in the northeastern areas of Koguryo since the close of the 3rd century. Especially, King Bongsang had won several battles against newly rising Muyung Hui. Later, King Micheon became so powerful as to invade Former Yen. However, the war between Koguryo and Former Yen became fiercer after Muyung Hao, son of Muyung Hui presided over many Sien-pei communities.
After Muyung Chuan ascended the throne, Former Yen conquered the eastern areas of the north China. As a result of the breakdown of the balance of power, Koguryo couldn't attack Former Yen, and there was no more war.
However, the situation changed in Later Yen Dynasty. The military power of Muyung weakened so as to lose consecutive wars against Koguryo. Therefore, Former Yen of Muyung Chuan as a supreme ruler had changed into Later Yen as an enfeebled Later yen dynasty whose existence was even endangered. Finally, Later Yen fell in consequence of a series of attacks by Koguryo.
