I tried to newly recognize the meaning of ‘Mangwangja(亡王子: the dead princes)’ as ‘Samwangja(三王子: the three princes)’ through the analysis of inscription of the sarira case in the Wangheung Buddhist Temple site. In other words, I thought that the mystery of the Buddhist sarira symbolizes the total number of three of ‘dead princes’. In addition, I interpreted the meaning of Ipchal(立刹: building a Buddhist temple or pagoda) written on the inscription as building a pagoda. Accordingly, the wooden pagoda of Wangheung Buddhist Temple has been thought to be built by King Widuk in order to pray for good fortune for the three princes who died in war. Since there was no more direct descendant of King Widuk, the throne was passed to the family of King Hye. The family of King Hye promoted to unite the whole royal family by building ‘a countryprotecting-Buddhist-temple’ named Wangheung Buddhist Temple in the wooden pagoda site, which laid the foundation for King Hye's accession to the throne. Namely the function of the pagoda was strengthened and expanded from a pagoda for praying for fortune for the royal family to a country-protecting-Buddhist-temple.
The analysis of inscription of the sarira case revealed that the royal family in a family line of King Widuk tried to boost the authority of the king by inspiring the idea that the King is the Buddhist through the monopoly of Buddhist sarira and its sharing. This trend is well illustrated by the posthumous epithet of King Beop, a descendant of King Hye, and the release of captive fish. Moreover, the mystery that the number of sarira has changed from two to three is considered to be very similar to one of Buddhist sarira in the crystal bottle of the wooden pagoda which had been in the Jeseokjung Buddhist Temple. The mystery of the sarira in the wooden pagoda of Wangheung Buddhist Temple intrinsically indicates the justifiability of the pagoda construction and war by King Widuk. In short, it is a mechanism to transform the death for the country by the three princes, from just the death in the lost war to the death as a martyr in the holy war. It is regarded as an effort to enhance the political justifiability of the succession to the throne by King Hye.
