In previous studies the adnominal clausal ending ‘-eul’ has been compared with other types of adnominal clausal endings, such as ‘-eun’ and ‘-neun’, to express future tense. The purpose of this study is to examine the adnominal clausal ending of ‘-eul’ that has only a modification function with no relation to tense. Such an adnominal clausal ending ‘-eul’ without confrontation of tense can be divided into three types: 1) ‘-eul+time noun’. When the adnominal clausal ending ‘-eul’ modifies a time noun such as ‘때(ttae)’, ‘적 (jeok)’, ‘제(je)’, ‘무렵(muryeop)’ or ‘즈음(jeueum)’ to connect the preceding and following clauses as a quasi-connective ending, it can modify noun without including a meaning of tense. 2) Meaning of aspect together with a dependent noun. This type is used with specific verbs following dependent words. 3) ‘-eul+common noun’. In this case, ‘-eul’ cannot be replaced by other adnominal clausal endings in the same way preceding declinable words modify the following substantives. These three types have the common characteristics that ‘-eul’ is used as a simple adnominal clausal ending unrelated to tense, and that the noun modified by the adnominal clause either has a meaning of a general name or is unlimited. Not only ‘-eul+time noun’ but also ‘-eul+dependent noun’ function as the syntactic equivalent to a single grammar morpheme, while ‘-eul+common noun’ is used as a morphological unit corresponding to a single vocabulary. Thus, not only ‘-eul+time noun’ but also ‘-eul+dependent noun’ can be analyzed as forming through a grammatical process, while ‘-eul+common noun’ can be analyzed in terms of a vocabulary-forming process. Use of the simple adnominal clausal ending ‘-eul’ is related to the basic meaning of the ending. Though adnominal clausal ending ‘-eul’ has a modality meaning that expresses a ‘speaker’s judgment on an unrealized situation’, the meaning of ‘future’ or ‘guess’ is also realized through this basic meaning.
