This paper examines the discourse on body in Munjang. It was from early modern period when people began to show interest in 'body' in modernistic meaning and the self-consciousness related to body stirred up artistic impulse. Henceforth, 'disease' and 'fatigue' were settled as literary representation and as the sense of civilization and the distance from modernization arouse, they appeared with various aspects as literary material. In essays and poems published in Munjang from late 1930s to early 1940s, various symptoms related to body began to be used in literary texts. 'Disease' was used as a subject matter to create literary individuality and reveal writers' consciousness. 'Fatigue' served as a momentum of preparing the space for transcendental recognition.
Lee Sang expressed his excessive self-consciousness by juxtaposing urban ills and his tuberculosis. It was a literary method to reveal contradiction and ills of modern society. Coming and going between Gyeongseong(Seoul) and Tonggyeong(Tokyo), reality and ideal, he resolutely carried out the experiment of reflecting the image of modern people after the model of his ill body. A fatigue Jeong Ji-yong felt in Joseon society under Japanese colonization was connected to his search for new literary space and manifestation of his spirit of perseverance. This was also linked to his reflection on national literature and search for new literature. Body is the starting point of sensing object and passage toward the new world. 'Ill and fatigued' body presents peculiar sense and individuality of writers in colonized Joseon and acted as an element allowing them to search for new literary space.
