The present article is to reflect the purpose of theological education of Hanshin Theological Seminary historically, and suggests the main focus on its education for ministerial candidates and its direction.
Chosun theological seminary started in 1940 with two purposes: subjectivity, that is to raise Korean ministers who would lead Korean churches, and globalism, that is to train leaders who would serve the world. The milestone of theological education is God’s mission and progressive theology, and ecumenical theology. After the establishment of Hanshin Graduate School of theology, Hanshin attempted to balance between academism and practice in ministry.
The curriculum for ministerial candidate needs to focus on the programs in ministry, and recover the reform church tradition, and seeks publicity of theology so that they would the leader of Korean society and church in the future. And concretely, it needs to specialize and expand theological education, deepen spirituality, and develop leadership.
For developing leadership, three are suggested: First is to develop ecumenical leadership that understand the current agenda such as peace, human right, ecology, women, religion and culture and capable to deal with the issues. Second is to develop cultural leadership that understand modernity and culture and obtain cultural literacy of media and technology. Third is servant leadership that participate in public welfare both in local and global. For this, curriculum needs to include practical field works, such as volunteer work for disabilities and site visitation that conflicts and fights.
