The purpose of this study is to discuss the opinions about the confrontation between shi-fei and its settlement shown in the interpretations on the "Qiwulun" chapter of the Zhuang Zi by Guo Xiang, who has been esteemed a master of Xuan-xue in the rapidly-changing social conditions in Wei and Jin Dynasty on the one hand and active in the front line of the political authority on the other and Park Sae Dang, who lived in the bickering political community of the 17th-century Chosun Dynasty.
Guo Xiang's pointing out Zhiren's personality, that is, Wushi-wufei and Liang-shun can be deemed the indication of a kind of mental composure questing after freedom from all trouble and anguish triggered by shi-fei in pursuit of freedom from the scene of the dispute and opposition between shi-fei in the mundane world and freedom from the choice between shi-fei.
Park Sae Dang, by considering human selfishness and prejudices as the cause of shi-fei conflict and concluding that the universal foundation on which the conflict can be settled is Chen-li, which he stipulates is Gong-shim(impartiality) inherent in all human beings, develops the logic of th conflict settlement.
The philosophy of Guo Xiang, who does not recognize substance as the basis on which the confrontation can be settled and claims both affirmation and denial of shi-fei, shows freedom from something, as it were, an individual's internal freedom which has a more or less passive meaning. In contrast, the interpretation of Park Sae Dang, an important figure of Seo-in So-ron in the whirlpool of party disputes of the 17th-century Chosun Dynasty, who acknowledges substance and argues for the settlement of shi-fei conflict through the conquest of selfishness by Gong-shim based on the contrast of Gong-shim and Sa-shim(selfishness), shows his awareness of the need for more active participation in society.
