From a historical perspective, Deungju in Shandong, China has significance in terms of the diplomatic relationship between China and Korea. In this paper, the meaning of Deungju from the perspective of the literary geography is discussed by analyzing descriptions of Deungju in various literary works, including poems based on travel logs at the end of Gorye dynasty, Jocheon Voyage Log by Hong Ik-han, and Gim Yeong-cheol Jeon.
Deungju was depicted as a stop over connecting the land and the sea route in the course of travel to and from China at the end of Goryeo dynasty and the early Joseon dynasty. A lodging house at Deungju Station and Bongrae station, Bongraegak, and Bojeongsa are the representative examples shown in the envoy travel literature. Gwon Geon and Jeong Mong-ju used the place as material for their literary works. A 30day literary log was recorded in the Jocheon Voyage Log by Hong Ik-han(1625).
Here, detailed descriptions of the landscape and traditions of Deungju and the places visited by the envoys as they successfully performed their mission were also included. Deungju in Gim Yeong-cheol Jeon was described as a city where love, happiness and the pain of separation between Gim Yeong-cheol and Lady Jeon were shared. It is expected that the depictions of Deungju in Korean literary works could serve as a significant historical record, and strengthen the ties between China and Korea.
