During the japanese colonial period, Jeong In-Taek’s novel changed from modernistic style to pre-japanese story. Therefore the core of study in the Jeong In-Tak’s novels have to explain of the sort of change. In Korean modernistic style novels, fear of death and dissociation of consciousness are one of the important characteristics. This characteristics are shared by Jeong In-Tak’s novels. The first part of the novel, the characters are suffering in fear and dissociation, but the ending of the novel, they have a happy life. Actually, they want to live a safe life in every day life.
But it is almost impossible to come true of the their hope, because japan has shifted to a wartime posture. So Joeng In-Taek dealt mainly with conflict of the private desire and public duties. Definitely his characters carried out their public duties, as Jeong-In Taek played along with the ruling of Japanese imperialism, but unconsciously his character pursued the happiness in every day life. This is that the conflict of consciousness and unconscious in Joeng In-Taek as himself. That’s why his novels are unsatisfactory to deal with these problems, and why his novels are under appreciated.
