Women have been placed only in the domain of 'body' which is the opposite place to the 'spirit' or 'knowledge'. During the Renaissance, women's condition was not different: women's limitation in the patriarchal society was so evident that women were men' belongings and basis for men's spiritual wholeness. But Lady Macbeth is a unique and unequalled woman in the period because she seems to be successfully acquiring the 'grotesque body image' by discarding all the feminine traits demanded by the ideology of the period. Body - image means the subject's spirit that is engraved in the body. Therefore body - image shows the coexistence and mutual relation of both body and soul.
This article firstly shows the process by which Lady Macbeth discards her body - image as an aristocratic woman, and attempts to acquire some different body image which was not allowed to any woman of that period. Therefore, it delves into how she can get an image contrary to the given image.
Secondly, this article also reveals how and why she fails in retaining her new image and shows the power of the Other that is deeply seated in her unconsciousness, which causes her symptom called 'unnatural troubles'. Due to the force of her unconsciousness, her body - image partly changes back to her first image. Therefore, her subjectivity reveals its limitation.
The point is that her seeming retardation is in fact originally planned. because all her decisions against Duncan are not against the patriarchal system. Her determination to dismiss all the feminine traits is only to create another patriarchal line starting with the name of Macbeth. Therefore, the subjectivity of Lady Macbeth as an independent woman subject is limited by the dominant ideology of the age from the start.
