The Imperial aid(Reichsturkenhilfe) was the most important issue but the religious question on the Imperial Diet(Reichstag) of the Holy Roman Empire in the first half of the 16th Century. Nevertheless, there's no many research achievements on the Imperial aid during the whole period of the threat to Europe by the Ottoman Turks. Above all, the relationship the Imperial aid with Ferdinand Ⅰ who was tasked to conduct the Turkish warfare has been a rather under-researched area.
The purpose of this essay is to explore some aspects of Ferdinand's policy toward the Imperial aid from the viewpoint of how he earns support from the Imperial lords(Reichsstande) and conducts it. His estimation was this support would make it possible to fight against the Sultan, Suleyman the Magnificent. But it was not a plain sailing to get support the Imperial Diet(Reichstag). All the most demanding job for him was to convince all the lords with the respective different interests and draw a consensus with unified action against the Turks.
However, as the princes were split up between protestants and catholics, consensus could not be reached at all. On the other hand, they even doubted the intention of Ferdinand about whether he wants to enhance the power of the House of Habsburg at their expenses. He also could not succeed to the throne in Hungary.
In 1541 when Suleyman dominated Buda, Ferdinand counteracted after one year of the occupation with an expedition to Buda which was assisted by the Imperial aid but failed. For that reason he could not help altering his tactics and policies toward the Ottoman Empire. Military attack would not be possible anymore at the point where the sultan was locating himself in Buda, which could be a serious threat to him. What he could do was at least to retain western Hungary. Besides as the Imperial aid was also exhausted, his final mean of reaction was diplomacy.
