This article tries to elucidate why keyholeshaped mounds were constructed only in the Yeongsan River Basin of South Korea in the late 5th century and early 6th century. By examining many relating subjects, it reviews not only the tendencies of the mounds, but also the archeological changes and the political movements in that area.
The keyholeshaped mounds are characterized by its regional and temporal limitation. Those people, who constructed them, had the diverse elements, which came from the regions of Kyushy, Kinai and Baekje. The time, when large urn burial and stone chamber tombs appeared in the Yeongsan River Basin, corresponded that Backje conquered this area. Backje ruled directly the region to secure the trade route against Goguryeo, which went from Yeongsan River via Gaya to Wa. Although there were other factors involved, it was Backje that drove this movements.
From this it can be concluded that the construction of the keyholeshaped mounds had something to do with the activities of the Gonji clan. The Gonji clan meant the japanese forces, which established the closed relationship with Gonji in Japan, and came back to Backje and played an important role in the political arena, after King Dongseung and King Muryeong came to the throne. They were dispatched as lords to the Yeongsan River Basin and controlled the provincial power in Jeolla Provinces. Because they did have no basis in Korea and were familiar with the japanese tomb, it is assumed that they had left the keyholeshaped mounds in Korea.
