This paper examines pragmatic issues addressed in four studies that deal directly with interlanguage pragmatics in the EFL context of Korea. From the examination, the paper finds that four major areas of interlanguage pragmatics have been investigated: pragmalinguistic strategies used to understand English implicatures, explicit versus implicit instruction, culturally-loaded English words as a learning target, and EFL textbooks as a source of (meta)pragmatic information. The study observes that research on interlanguage pragmatics in the EFL context of Korea has a long way to go and many areas to cover. The study concludes with some suggestions for future research. It suggests, among others, that, considering the reality that the use of English is dominated by nonnative speakers, who actually outnumber native speakers by 4:1, research should aim at helping Korean EFL learners understand native English speakers’ pragmatic usage and intentions, but not necessarily expecting them to behave likewise.
