CHOSUNJOK writers, living mostly around the Yanbien province produced numerous works and continued a literary tradition even after going through the colonial occupation of Japan, during which the usage of the Korean language was strongly subdued. This article provides a cursory review of these remarkable developments and then places a sharper focus on more recent progress during the period of reform and openness following the Cultural Revolution.
The article addresses the changing trends in the themes of CHOSUNJOK novels, the differences between the languages of the mainland Koreans and the CHOSUNJOK, as well as the need for translating CHOSUNJOK writings into the mainland Korean language to convey the meaning faithfully. While some may view this as a dangerous attempt to alienate the CHOSUNJOK from the rest of the Koreans, I would argue that accepting the differences based on the analyses of linguistic rules that have formed and diverged over time would create the starting point for bridging the gaps and establishing compatibility between the two texts.
Both the literary and linguistic aspects are addressed in the same article. It is to analyze the differences between the two languages in the context of literature and then to contribute to the process of translation which are proposed here. The fact that translation is often considered a literary pursuit in its own right may help the readers to understand the purpose of such an exercise.
The review of CHOSUNJOK novels conducted in this fashion reveals that they display a truly diverse array of profound themes and have now come to a stage of fresh techniques and esthetic appreciation.
Along with these positive developments, it is also observed that the language used in the recent CHOSUNJOK literary works is making esthetic enhancements, especially among new writers, assuming more resemblance to the mainland Korean language. Rather than a unilateral impact from Seoul, this may be viewed as a result of a positive process of self-reflection and progress based on mutual relationships between the two groups. The mainstream Koreans are no different in this aspect as they reflect on today's Korean language, which in the view of many has been discolored by the heavy use of Chinese and English words, and try vigorously to spruce it up.
