The purpose of this paper is to design a curriculum based on the analysis of needs survey from learners who participated in short-term Korean language and culture courses. The number of participants in short-term vacation courses has been increasing every year, but there is as yet only little assessment or research on short-term Korean language and culture curriculum.
This study lays the foundation of coursework design based on an analysis of the needs of learners in short-term courses and is intended to provide useful material that can be directly applied to the design of short-term curriculum by various organizations.
This short-term Korean language and culture curriculum is planned for four weeks during the summer vacation and targeted to students from English-speaking countries at an elementary level of Korean. Its purpose is to develop learners’ basic Korean communication ability, which is needed for everyday life, and increase their understanding of Korea and Korean culture through experiential programs. We have identified three educational goals. First of all, students can learn basic pronunciation, sentence structure, and how to greet in Korean, introduce themselves by this curriculum. Second, students can understand about Korea better with this curriculum. Third goal is to let students experience Korea by visiting Korean meaningful places, doing Korean culture activities. This curriculum can be divided into Korean language study, Korean studies lectures, field trips, experiential learning, and entertainment. We have provided detailed information and times for each of these content areas.
In the future, we could actually offer the perfect short-term curriculum with many tries, for example, making books for this curriculum, studying about teaching method, launching the curriculum on a trial basis, evaluating the curriculum.
