This study sought to advance previous studies on the effect of category membership on audience appeal. Previous research has shown that a distinct market identity of a product benefits its performance. A product with a membership across multiple categories performs poorly since it confuses audience for evaluation, lowering its audience appeal. Recent studies have refined previous literature by showing that the degree of category contrast, not simply the number of categories, matters for audience appeal. However, those studies measured the degree of category contrast at the level of a category (e.g., a high contrast category versus a low contrast one). When audiences evaluate a film, however, they seek to identify a category of a film as a whole (e.g., a comedy-horror film). Thus, using the Korean film industry data, we presented a measure of audience consensus on categorizing a film to examine how diverse audiences identify an overall category of a film coherently. A film’s low score in this measure indicat es that the audiences have difficulties categorizing it, lowering its audience appeal. We also sought to go a step further by analyzing interaction between the number of categories and audience consensus on two types of audience appeal, the number of critical reviews and ticket sales. We demonstrated that the number of categories negatively affects audience appeal, but its effect is contingent on how coherently audiences perceive overall categorization of a product.
