This is an analytical and evaluative study of women ministers’ works in Korean churches. Since the Christian gospel has been arrived in Korean churches, women ministers has been important roles in spreading the gospel of Jesus Christ. Indeed, they are the Deborah of Korean churches. However, in spite of their contributions, their works had not been recognized properly. So, this study is to discover the works of these women ministers’ role in Korean churches.
The first section of the articles deals with the statistical approaches which shows is current situation of women ministers in Presbyterian Church of Korea denomination. Even though women’s ordination was finally allowed for pastorate in 1996, but according to the statistics, many women ministers were not actively contributing to the pastoral ministry as they wished, and only concentrated in assistant roles or special ministry area. Comparing with male pastors, female pastors were much difficult to find the job and many were actually underemployed or unemployed.
The second part of the article shows that in spite of these difficulties, how women ministers were able to endure the hostile environment and finally made important progress in their participation in Korean churches. Gradually, more women ministers were able to work as senior pastor, but the majority of women ministers still works as associate pastors. In some cases, the couples, husband and wife together, were co-pastoring the same church. More women ministers actively participated in various special ministries, such as mercy ministry, military ministry, hospital ministry, cross-cultural ministry, disabled people ministry, education ministry, literature ministry and etc.
Then, the writer suggests that in spite of current contributions, women ministers’ participation should be enhanced. And, in order to increase women ministers’ specialization in their ministry, the writer has suggested four possible things that we can do for the change. First, from the theological education setting, partnership between women and men should be exercised so that it can be modeled to the local church level. Second, the curriculum for the specialization of women ministry should be developed in the seminary so that the student can get a concrete and tangible results for the specialization of women ministry. Third, in order to vitalize women’s ministry, mentoring system must be utilized not only between students, but also with alumni and students as well as faculty members. Fourth, women ministers’ unique and specialization of women ministries should be encouraged.
