The everyday life of labor in North Korea is a ‘new world’. Here, the newness signifies the everyday life of labor that always existed but never been captured by researchers. Through research on the everyday life of labor in North Korea, the so-called ‘North Korean phenomena’, which have been taken as a matter of course, will be revised or further elaborated.
This paper focuses on how workers as humans managed and lived their everyday life of labor. Workers are understood as subjective actors who cannot be reduced to a part of the production process and who, in particular social settings, organized and created their own ‘labor and the everyday life’. From this perspective, this paper also searches for new research methods in analyzing labor and the everyday life in North Korea.
The everyday life is tenacious. Despite socialist cultural revolutions, it could not be destroyed. The everyday life was a fortress that could not be smashed by various bolsheviks on the scene. The research on the everyday life of labor in North Korea will contribute to reconstructing North Korean society in diverse and multidimensional ways.
