Modern automotive companies have bent its energies to the development of environment-friendly passenger cars with high fuel efficiency and well-balanced vehicle performances such as ride & handling, NVH, safety, aero & thermal, and durability. Among those, fuel efficiency has become one of the most important factors in global vehicle development process due to stringent CO2 regulation and high oil prices. Therefore, most of major companies have been trying the best to develop mass efficient lightweight vehicles as well as fuel efficient subsystems. Tire is one of the crucial subsystems to affect fuel economy. It should be developed for minimizing the rolling resistance to reduce road loads while meeting other performance requirements. But the fuel economy tire is quite expensive, and generally has the limitation in keeping the lateral stiffness of tires for stable handling. It is required to balance between fuel economy and handling performance, and also required to properly compensate the lateral stiffness of body and suspension for the deterioration of the lateral tire stiffness. But the reinforcement of body and suspension might cause the mass increment. Hence, in order to develop a fuel efficient vehicle, optimal body and chassis stiffness should be allocated for minimizing the mass impact while meeting required performances under complex design conditions. This paper deals with a study on sensitivity analysis of vehicle factors to affect the lateral force deflection on tire contact patch in order to optimally allocate the stiffness on vehicle.
