In the decades around the turn of the century, a discourse on Asian community spread in Japan and Korea as a consequence of escalated anti-American sentiments. After 2010, however, reflecting the relative decline of the US hegemony and the rise of China, such anti-American propaganda as well as Asian community discourse have lost its momentum. Instead, the intensified historical and territorial disputes have driven diplomatic relations into a deadlock. This study aspires to shed light on the ideo-historical cause and background of these phenomena, and to provide with an opportunity to find an intellectual challenges for East Asian regional order. First, this paper analyzes the historical relevance of “anti-American Subjectification and Asianism” in Japan. Second, it traces the process through which “anti-American conservatism” in Japan absorbed leftist thoughts in the post-Cold War era.
