In order for us to grow toward a mature advanced society it is quite necessary to perceive and understand correctly all the problems involving the disabled. In this regard, we are glad to note that as late as in `90s the general society including churches started to show some concerns about the disabled, but unfortunately, the social walls remain high against them as before. Underlying these conditions are deep-rooted prejudices -social, religious, and cultural-against the disabled. These prejudices have worked ill upon the disabled themselves, helping see themselves with wrong ideas. It is impossible to attain a healthy, mature society without overcoming such deep-rooted prejudices. Not until the day when our thoughts about the disabled become sound and just, it would ever be possible to hope that any social policies and welfare systems for the disabled, including social activities, be conceived and carried out in the right way. In this article, in order to shed light on the root causes of those wrongful perceptions which the Korean people have about the disabled, I have disscussed a variety of cultures such as Confucianism, military, industrial-capitalism, shamanism and finally, the general religious traditions. In this process, I tried to explain that the problems surrounding them are not confined to the disabled people but concern the entire society around them, the wholebody of the non-disabled. Furthermore, I pointed out that those prejudices and wrong perceptions about the disabled have, directly or indirectly, resulted from, and worsened by, undesirable influences exerted by social, religious and cultural, values systems. Particularly, I was also able to confirm the fact that all those folksy sayings which used to derogate and distort things about the disabled have played a big role in instilling all those wrongful prejudices and perceptions against them in the lives of the Korean people. On the other hand, I tried to describe all the power, wisdom and courage which the disabled people have displayed in building their beautiful, undaunted lives through numerous trials and despair. I, in this article, further maintained that more than working to corrrect our ill perceptions about the disabled, it is important for us to learn the disabled people`s sensitivity to the suffering and understanding capability for their lives toward the goal of building a healthy and mature communities. Finally, I was happy to see in the Bible Jesus thinking and working for the disabled in their place.
