Chuseok, with the lunar New Year’s Day, is one of the two biggest holidays of these days in Korea. But it was part of four Great Days (四名日) in the Joseon period which were the lunar New Year’s Day (설), the cold food day of Hanshik (寒食), the doubled number five day of Dano (端午), and the Autumn full moon’s day of Choseok (秋夕). Now Choseok is surely a holiday in Korean society, but it was once considered as a less important holiday in the Joseon period with its prevalent Neo-Confucianism that judged Chuseok not to be based on any ancient Chinese saints’ institution.
How to set the order between major and minor holidays was an important issue of the middle Joseon period. Answer papers submitted by Lee, Yi (李珥) and Yun, Seon-do(尹善道) when they passed the civil service exam well deliver the story. According to Lee, Yi, some days should be re-considered as minor holidays since they were days without firm ground of ancient Chinese saints’ institution. And the four Great Days were included in category of minor holidays.
Moreover, there was controversy over lack of theoretical basis of Neo-Confucianism for four Great Days. While the Four Seasons’ Rituals (四時祭) come from Zhu Xi’s Family Rituals, the four Great Days of Chosun do not appear in the text. Accordingly, rituals at ancestors’ grave site in the four Great Days should be interrupted. But the tradition of four Great Days was so stable to artificially put an end to it.
To overcome this gap, Neo-Confucianism scholars of Joseon re-valuated four Great Days as Four Seasons’ Four Great Days by connecting custom of 4 Great Days and principal of Zhu Xi’s Four Seasons’ Ritual. As a result, in the late Joseon society, the idea of Four Seasons’ Four Great Days was accepted by Neo-Confucianism leaders including opinion leaders like Song, Si-yeol (宋時烈). And some scholars actually practiced rituals at grave site in Hanshik, Dano and Chuseok.
Choseok was one of four Great Days that were re-valuated to coincide with Zhu Xi’s Family Rituals, and Spring’s Hanshik(寒食) and Autumn’s Chuseok (秋夕) were devised to be compression of the four Great Days. Status of Chuseok as a ritual day of ancestors’ grave site was reinforced along with this tendency.
The status of Chuseok as the biggest family ritual holiday of today’s Korea should be considered with development of debate in the Joseon period on how to overcome controversy over Chuseok by which it was judged as a minor holiday, and to re-valuate Chuseok and the four Great Days worth rank with Four Seasons’ Ritual of Zhu Xi’s Family Rituals.
