The letter ’bu(不)’ in the modern Chinese word ‘negative word(否定詞)’ has been used in the oracle bone script (Gapgolmun: 甲骨文) since the Shang Dynasty. This letter has a role of negation, and some of the other forms of this letter are as follows: □ㆍ□ㆍ □ㆍ□ ㆍ□ㆍ□ . This writing examines the formation (造字) principles of the letter ’bu(不)’.
In the ancient oracle bone script, the letter ‘g?(戈)’ is depicted as the letter ‘g?(戈)’ and ‘g?(戈)[or(□)]. The letter ‘g?(戈)’ takes the forms of □ㆍ□ ? □ while ‘g?(戈)[or(□)] takes the forms of □ ? □ . In the letter ‘g?(戈)[or(□)], □ㆍ□ are the bodies of the letter, and □ㆍ□ are the tassels hanging on the rear of the letter. The letter ’bu(不)’ is imitative of the “tassel” part of the letter ‘g?(戈)’: ㆍ .
The letter ‘bu(不)’ does not connote any meaning related to a decorative “tassel.” Nevertheless, I presume that the letter ‘bu(不)’ was formed with the tassel form in the rear part of the letter ‘g?(戈)’ because the sound of the tassel character was equivalent to that of the letter ‘bu(不)’ at the time of the formation of this letter. There were many characters representing a decorative “tassel” or “string” in ancient China; the letter ‘f?n(紛) carried the meaning of a decorative “tassel” during the Western Han period. The Old Chinese letter ‘bu (不)’ can be zh?yun(之韻), b?ngni?(?紐), ping tone(平聲), and p?w? ①, and the letter ‘f?n(紛)’ can be wenyun(文韻), p?ngni?(滂紐), ping tone(平聲), and ph?w?n ①, which have similar sounds.
