This study deals with ghosts and the dead haunting London in Dickens`s essays Sketches by Boz(1836) and The Uncommercial Traveller(1861) in relation to his representation of London as a gothic city. This study contemplates the possibility of dialectics of unknowability and perceptibility, the everyday and the impenetrable, and the city as gothic labyrinth and the city as urban community based on communal feelings. In his essay, Dickens depicts the invisible ghostly others as the products of Victorian social structure that enhances the division between the poor and the middle class, and in doing so, he criticizes moral complacency of the middle sorts. Simultaneously, however, he provides visibility to the invisible through the uncanny encounter with them and discovers their viability through the eyes of a sympathetic (non)spectator. This study defines Dickens`s narrative style of journalism as the virtual expression of the Benjaminian dialectical images, for his essays care less for coherence and unity than for the immediacy of urban experiences constructed from discontinuous fragments of reality both from the past and the present.
