Writings on American history in Korea has recently undergone meaningful changes. One of the most noticeable trends is the rise of the cultural history and the decline of the diplomatic history. The fundamental meaning and role of studies of the U.S history in Korea is to provide the scholars and the general readers with in-depth historical analysis of the issues that address the current American society and the U.S.-Korean relations. We historians have to be constantly aware that the writings of U.S. history is to be read only by a handful of scholars of limited circle for their own academic entertainment. In that sense, it is quite delightful to see the rise of the cultural history that touches the various aspects of everyday life of the American people that also draws strong interest in Korea, such as shopping mall, McDonald’s, and Playboy magazine. It is depressing, however, to see that the writings of political and diplomatic histories has been declining. As the Cold War ended, the general public has lost its interest in the political and diplomatic histories, once the most popular areas in U.S. history. Given the realities of U.S.-Korean relations that has not been changed in its fundamental nature, we need to vitalize the value of the diplomatic history. With these trends in mind, this paper reviews the changing historiography of U.S. history in Korea during the last two years (2013~2014).
