This paper aims to show how conceptual blending theory deals with the meaning construction of irony. Fauconnier & Turner`s(1994, 1998, 2002) conceptual blending theory posits the four-space network consisting of two input spaces, the generic space, and the blended space. Conceptual blending is a cognitive process which is a combination of input space construction, cross-space mapping, and selective projection. The meaning of language is constructed by the operation of conceptual blending. Irony is usually defined as the linguistic expression in which there is some opposition, conflict, or inconsistency between literal meaning and speaker`s intended meaning. This type of irony is called figurative irony. But for some irony, there is no such opposition. This type of irony is called literal irony. Anyway, the concept of opposition is an indispensible component of irony. It is shown that the opposition in irony is between the ironic expression and the situation in which the irony is used. So the ironic expression is used to establish one input space, and the situation is used to establish another.
