The main purpose of this study is to examine the Korean Churches’ position to embryo stem cell research. At the moment, the positions are divided into two: while one argues all sorts of embryo stem cell research have to be banned, the other proposes residual embryo research has to be permitted. In this situation, this study divided into four parts: Firstly, the different positions to moral status of embryo is examined. From Christian point of view, moral status of embryo is usually considered as whole person, potential person, or simple substance. Especially, this study shows that the different positions to moral status of embryo are influenced by social context. Secondly, absolute ban to embryo stem cell research is studied. This position is focused on ‘embryo as person,’ and all sorts of embryo stem cell research is considered as killing of life. On this basis, one argues that embryo research should be strongly banned. Thirdly, limited permission to embryo stem cell research in Korean Churches is examined. The logic of this position is as follows: Considering both special status of residual embryo produced in the process of IVF and benefit resulting from the research, although initial embryo is considered as human life, limited permission can be admitted. In conclusion, this study gives some suggestions for the future of embryo stem cell research in Korean Churches.
