《Short Stories in Easy Wen-li》 is a reading book for children compiled by Chen Chunsheng(陈春生) in the early period of the Republic of China. Until recently, major concerns about reading books for children have been given mostly to the official textbooks published from the late Qing dynasty period, but there has been little mention of this book published by a civilian. This book has a unique form, style, and content. It adopts the form of Leishu(类书) in ancient China without any alteration, and can be said to have a dual publication purpose of ‘Christian missionary work’ and ‘child education’. It was not so common that a reading book for children in the early period of the Republic of China was published in the form of Leishu in ancient China. It can be said that this book includes the publisher’s intention to provide a reading book for the moral education of children in addition to the basic purpose of Christian missionary work. In this respect, the present study on 《Short Stories in Easy Wen-li》 can be said to be meaningful and valuable in civilians’ book publication for children"s education as well as in influencing relationship of the form of Leishu in ancient China.

It is somewhat unusual that in these circumstances, a reading book for children 《Short Stories in Easy Wen-li》 was compiled mostly with anecdotes of Western people. It was possible because it was not used as a textbook at school, but used as a reading book by civilians. As discussed, this book, as a reading book for Christian children, was published mainly for the purpose of Christian missionary work but this book is known to focus more on the moral education of children at that time than Christian missionary work.
