This study is an exploration for the possibility of how Korean novels can be read differently and a search for an advanced way to create a desirable elderly culture. In order to greet the 21st century that is based on knowledge and information, Korean society is making efforts for reading education of adolescents. Such needs of the time should be equally applied to the elderly.
Reading is an intellectual activity that people can do relatively easily at old age. Especially, novels are reading materials that the elderly can read more easily than other genres. The biggest strength of novels is that it is a flexible genre that allows various interpretations based on readers’ individual life. In addition, readers of novels not only engage in a rather passive reading experience of pursuing authors’ messages but can play a more active role of generating creative energy. This is another reason why novel reading at old age is something this society should actively pursue. Novels that are read at old age after experiencing various joy, sorrow, and hardships can draw much more mature reaction compared to reading at other ages and are expected to produce clear meanings in connection with the real life experiences.
If reading can settle as an elderly culture, it can become the basis of establishing positive discourse about the elderly against the negative images and discriminatory discourses about old people. Especially, novels that are easier to understand and less burdensome compared to other genres can be an easy way to create a new elderly culture that help maintain the dignity and existential value of the elderly.
When the reading culture of the elderly is settled, old people will have the potential to be the main consumers of publications and important agents of economy. Through reading, the elderly will be able to rediscover the limitless possibility and value of themselves and will recognize that they are the competent components of society who can acquire information and knowledge, develop new resources, and pursue a new life.
