The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of their after-school extracurricular activity on the improvement of physical activity abilities of infants and young children. The research targeted 258 children in children care facilities, kindergartens and elementary schools. After-school extracurricular education included arts activities(art, music), physical activities(dance, taekwondo), and supplementary lessons (English, mathematics, etc.). Children comprised 4years(n=64), 5years(n=72), 6years(n=70), and 7years(n=52). For the measurement tool, Tanaka`s(1987) TK-type children development examination paper was used. To examine children`s physical activity abilities, the examination paper was made to consist of 19 items concerning physical activity abilities, and sub-elements were comprised in simple work ability, small muscle exercise ability, attention and concentration, and work ability. For the rating method, the examiner observed the examines` behavior and marked results on the 5 likert scale. For data processing, the reliability and validity of measurements developed by previous researches were assessed through diverse quantitative psychological assessment methods such as exploratory factor analysis, item-measurement correlation, and Cronbach α coefficient. Findings indicated that extracurricular education for preschoolers and children differentiated their physical activity abilities, and that diverse education programs should be introduced to be suited for the age and physical conditions of infants and young children.
