This paper is an effort to investigate ‘old-age,’ a current national concern as well as the existential condition of an individual, through the Confucianism of pre-modern East Asia which was the foundation of socio-cultural structure of society. Strong emphasis is put on the attitude and practices of Confucius scholars of Chosŏn Dynasty who had encountered the event of ‘aging’ in person. In Chosŏn Dynasty where ‘rite’(禮) as social order and institutional practice played a role to stabilize a nation-society-family cycle, a ‘old man’ was a leading figure of rituals and its main beneficiary in that he is provided with a high status. However, as moral cultivation, a main purpose of Confucianism, requires uninterrupted process of life time efforts, the experience of an old age was a new challenge demanding fresh approaches of moral cultivation. For example, the Confucius scholars of Chosŏn dynasty such as Yi Ik and Chŏng Yak-Yong attempted to embrace the event of aging while experiencing their bodies not as a tool of moral cultivation but as an object of management and caring. Furthermore, their experience of aging allowed them to discover companions of microscopic everyday world of life such as canes, eyeglasses and grandchild, not the macroscopic world of ideas. This aging process that they represented and their efforts to focus on microscopic relationships and the naturalization of their own bodies away from the social responsibility for nation, might be evaluated as realization and internalization of ‘moral individualism’.
