This study explores the reasons that Korean parents choose Southeast Asian ESL (English as a second language) countries−Malaysia, Singapore, and the Philippines−as their children’s destinations for study abroad. A total of 10 Korean parents whose children are studying, or have studied, in Southeast Asian ESL countries participated in this study. Data were collected through individual semi-structured interviews. The data analysis demonstrates that Southeast Asian ESL countries are attractive because of their low cost of living and education, the opportunity to learn multiple languages, their various types of education programs, and their geographical, cultural, and educational proximity to Korea. Each country also has its own distinctive features as a destination for study abroad. The key advantages of Malaysia include low cost of living and education, and learning multiple languages such as Chinese and Malay. The parents who chose Singapore highly valued Singapore’s cheap but perfect public educational system. The Philippines was considered by the parents to be the best place for both emotional and academic adjustment.
