The study is to explore the introduction of Christian coins and to analyze the socio-religious meanings in terms of the numismatic iconography in the Early Church. The first issue of Christian coinage was made in the Great Age of emperor Constantine. His Christian coins was a less than five percent among the total volume of minted coins, but in the flood of pagan coins it symbolized the coming of the Christian Roman Empire. It also played a key role in informing the emperor’s friendly attitude toward Christian faith. Constantine’s Christian coins bear basically the “Chi-Rho” symbol, which is the abbreviation of the name of Christ. Latin cross coins also appeared at the similar time, but the volume of cross coins were comparatively small to the “Chi-Rho” coin.
Christian coins also reflected political confrontation and upheaval. A good example of this is a Maganetius’ coin issued around 350 AD. General Magnentius of the West issued an unprecedented Christian coin bearing largest Chi-Rho Symbol in order to secure his political legitimacy after killing then Emperor Constans. By issuing this kind, Magnentius expected the support of orthodox Christian churches who were hostile toward Constantius II, Arian-oriented eastern emperor. Response to the Magnentius coin was minted by General Vetranio who supported Constantius II, This coin pictures the vision of “Milvian Battle” of Constantine the Great, which has the legend of “HOC SIGNO VICTOR ERIS.” Constantius struggled with Magnentius for the sole leadership of two Roman realms, and by issuing the coin Constantius claimed his qualification as rightful successor. About this time, coins of pagan images and of traditional themes almost disappeared. The central message of the Christian coinage of this age is political and religious triumph. It is true that in the coins the image of conquest was emphasized while the message of original love and devotion of Christianity weakened.
