The purpose of this study is to suggest how to improve bicycle lanes preparing for the use of personal mobilities(PMs) on bicycle lanes.
Firstly, basic improvements necessary are as follows; 1) In order to prevent conflicts between users, installment of new road signs and marks which show permission of PMs on bicycle lanes are essential. 2) Meticulous bicycle road maintenance is needed because PM’s wheel size is very small compared to that of general bicycles. 3) Education regarding safety issues such as lights, helmets, hand signals, and passing skills should be strengthened.
Secondly, bicycle · pedestrian sharing streets need to be improved as follows; 1) Separated bicycle and pedestrian shared streets need to be changed to non-separated bicycle and pedestrian shared streets if either the width of pedestrian space or that of bicycle space is less than 1.5m. 2) If total width of bicycle and pedestrian shared streets is less than 1.5m than they need to be changed to pedestrian streets.
Thirdly, bicycle only lanes need to adopt the concept of ‘protected bike lane’ from cities in the north america in order to secure safe use of bicycle.
Fourthly, we now need protected bike lanes in urban centers. As the aims of future city are healthy, environment friendly and green city, we should utilize bicycles and PMs as alternative transport modes. Thus we need green transport infrastructures such as elevated bicycle only highways in and to the city centers.
