This study is intended to look into the effect of spiritual well-being on the meaning of life in the elderly. To achieve this, a survey was carried out to the elderly. The results are summarized as follows.
First, the correlation analysis in the effect of spiritual well-being on the meaning of life in the elderly showed that religious well-being had a very weak positive relationship, while existential well-being had a moderate relationship, adopting hypothesis 1: Spiritual well-being will affect the meaning of life in the elderly.
Second, the differences in the effect of spiritual well-being on the meaning of life in the elderly showed that religious well-being depended on health status, religion and spouse, while existential well-being depended on academic background and religion, partially adopting hypothesis 2: The effect of spiritual well-being on the meaning of life in the elderly will depend on demographic factors.
Especially, in hypothesis 2, the most important demographic factor affecting the meaning of life in the elderly was health status. And spiritual well-being was partially adopted as an existential well-being factor. In the above-mentioned correlation analysis, religious well-being had a very weak positive linear relationship with the meaning of life in the elderly, but it had a statistically significant effect on the meaning of life in the elderly. In the regression analysis, it didn’t have a statistically significant effect on the meaning of life in the elderly. The regression analysis is more rigorous than the correlation analysis and needs to be examined in more detail.
These results confirm that existential well-being is a mechanism to have a positive effect on the meaning of life in the elderly.
