There have been long-lasting debates about the categorical identity of Korean conjunctive forms such as geuri-go, geurae-seo, geureo-na and the like. They are described as conjunctions/disjunctions by some scholars, while they are classified as sentential adverbs by others. This paper argues that these conjuctive forms should be analyzed as syntactic constructions comprised of a phrasal category headed by an anaphoric predicate and the markers indicating grammatical roles thereof. This paper argues that this way of analysis properly explains the parallel distribution of the conjunctive forms, and captures the systematic correlations between syntactic categories and their grammatical functions in Korean. In order to do so, this paper contrasts the distributional difference between the English conjunction and and its corresponding conjunctive forms in Korean, and shows that they appear in exactly the positions where the conjunctive/subjunctive clauses show up. In the course of discussion, this paper presents some cases where the conjunctive forms emphasize the preceding phrases, which is a new characteristic that has not been mentioned. The conclusions drawn by this paper provide some clues for understanding why so many Korean grammarians of the early 19<SUP>th</SUP> century considered the so-called verbal endings as independent syntactic units, that is, words.
