This paper studied symbols of others among Korean residents in Japan by a Japanese writer. The book 『Blood of Others』, a story based on the Jinwu Lee Affair (a murder case of a female Japanese high school student) in 1958, was considered. This was compared to 『Memorial services without priests』 by Seokbeom Kim, which was based on the same affair. How crimes of Korean residents in Japan were described in the post-war literary world in the 1960s was analyzed.
This study found the following: Regarding 『Memorial services without priests』by Kim, the end of asymmetric relationships which were not constructed outside via Japanese people as the attackers were described as defeats of the Korean residents in Japan. On the contrary, in 『Blood of Others』, the end of Japanes unilateral “good will” in saving lives was described as a Japanes defeat. This paper explored the process by which Japanes national identity and the agency of Korean residents in Japan were commutatively processed in the relationship between Korea and Japan. This changed fluidly in the Cold War era while Japan"s national identity was rebuilt and the agency of Korean residents in Japan was constructed.
