This study attempts to analyze the advice scene related to the king Xerxes (486-465 BC). For this purpose, I mainly refer to two different data. One is the History of the Greek historian Herodotus, and the other is the book of Esther. Scholars regard Herodotus’s Xerxes and Esther’s Ahasuerus as the same king.
In this study, I am particularly interested in the role of counselors appearing in both sources and the attitudes and responses of Xerxes. According to Esther, Ahasuerus follows the advices of his counsellors on almost all occasions. Herodotus records in detail what wise courtiers specifically recommended by the side of Xerxes. But according to the History of Herodotus, Xerxes is often described as rejecting rather than following the advices of his counselors. This difference makes it difficult to assess the style of the rule of Xerxes. If Esther’s king Ahasuerus and Herodotus’s Xerxes are the same king, how do we understand the difference in his propensities, which are described in the two sources?
Herodotus and the author of the book of Esther have a very different ethnic background, Greek and Jewish respectively. This ethnic difference and the difference of their historical experiences may seem to have influenced them when Herodotus described Xerxes and the author of Esther portrayed the king Ahasuerus. For the Greeks, Persians were invaders who wanted to overthrow the Greek civilization that was just blooming by the power of the great empire. The Greeks thought that they eventually overcame the Persian invasion and made their civilization flourish. On the other hand, the Persian empire came to the Jews more positively than the previous empires. Above all, by Persia the Jews were able to return to their homeland and restore their religion.
