Study of the Foreign Learners' Understanding of Korean Poetry-Centering on Paradoxical Expressions Woo, Jae-YoungThe aim of this study is to develop an understanding of the issues concerning the learning of paradoxical expressions in modern Korean poetry:how foreign learners of Korean language come to understand them and what sort of difficulties they are likely to encounter in the middle of the learning. In line with these issues, this study will discuss several ways of teaching paradoxical expressions in Korean poetry to foreign learners of Korean language. As the theoretical grounds, various theories concerning paradox will be introduced at the beginning, followed by the functions of paradoxical expressions. Empirical data based on a survey analysis will show the foreign learners' comprehension of paradoxical expressions in Korean poetry. Both approaches will provide implications for the discussions of teaching poetry in the Korean literary education setting targeting foreign learners. Participants were made up of 9 graduate students majoring Korean Language Education.This study may add up a small contribution to Korean literary education in the sense that discussions focus on foreign learners from different cultural backgrounds rather than native Korean learners. Continued discussions on specific methodologies of Korean literary education for foreign learners will give foreigners opportunities to pay much more attention to Korean literature and lead them to broader understanding of it.
